Roadside Sunflowers

This photograph was captured in Iwaki, Fukushima, Japan, utilizing a Leica M6 35mm camera equipped with a 50mm lens and Kodak T-Max 400 film.

It is important to note that this is not a digital print; both the negative and the print were personally developed in my darkroom.

Beyond the initial photography, the procedure to produce a print of this caliber is relatively intricate, demanding proficiency, knowledge, and considerable time. The production of a silver gelatin print involves several steps:

1. The image is enlarged from the film onto an enlarger and exposed for the correct contrast grade for an appropriate duration.
2. The print is developed, fixed, and then washed for 45 minutes in continuously flowing water to eliminate all residual chemicals.
3. The print is left to dry for several days, during which it will curl.
4. Subsequently, the print is pressed flat using a specialized hot mount press.

When executed with expertise, the result is a silver gelatin print that possesses the durability to last for centuries.
